We have lived in BC now for 1 year. We are still acting as though we are tourists...a good way to appreciate everything!

Our Gift Boy

Tim & I have recently noticed the indulgence our country has. There is little left for us to be given as gifts. Everyone in Canada has their basic needs met and when it comes to ‘giving’ for special occasions such as birthdays, It’s often really hard to think of what to get each person. For Lucy’s birthday, we are often encountered with the question of “what does she need?”. We know a 4 year old will still expect birthday presents but the Liberian children we sponsor are so grateful for the $30/month they get that just covers the bare essentials that it made us realize just how much we have here in Canada. We don’t need to indulge ourselves any more when there is people out there that would think they won a lottery if they traded positions with any one of us.

Another factor that is going to be more than obvious the very first morning after Halloween [or even currently in some stores] when the “Christmas Joy” freight train smacks you in the senses and shows us just how much materialism is part of our daily lives and provides skewed ideals to shoot for and leaves us feeling incomplete if we don’t have specific items- “What? Those jeans are from last year? You poor bugger!”. Anyhow, my point is how much we are dependent on material goods to make us feel better and complete. It’s very much a part of our lives and culture but we are going to make an effort to steer from that and give presents that truly make a difference.

So this is our unorthodox and small effort to do something that matters. We want to replace the idea giving presents to one another but instead sponsor a child the giftee’s name for that month. We have taken on another child just for this purpose. Fifteen year old Uriah who was never sponsored was gushing when he found out he has ‘parents’. But being a ‘Linklater’, let him know that he has a much larger family than just us. He has grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, cousins, friends and a dog [who maybe might not write him]. So he has become our ‘gift kid’- we plan to sponsor him on your behalf on your birthday/occasion.

That’s our plan. We aren’t going to change the world but after reading Uriah’s letter, we realized we may help his. This is a head’s up for when your birthday rolls around, you may get a sweet Liberian boy in your mail box. The money we would have spent on a present is going directly to Uriah’s needs. And on the flipside, we don’t expect any more presents either. We have more than enough. If you would like to learn more about kids like Uriah….

Letter from Uriah upon learning he was finally sponsored:

We'll Be HOME for Christmas!!!

Yup, we have decided to come home for Christmas -so get out the eggnog, candy canes, and gingerbread (ok, boy that was cheesy!!)

We really miss everyone and really can't wait until next summer to visit..much too long of a wait. Tim and I discussed the idea of bombing across the snow-laden country in the ol' Explorer with the kids and Kerby in tow...We hope to arrive mid-Dec. We have friends house-sitting here for the duration of our vacation (hey - rhyming!) So , they will enjoy our home and the area while we adjust to "winter". It will be wonderful. We want to see everyone! Poor ol' Lucy thinks we are moving home- she thinks the only reason we live here is because she is in swimming lessons- she said "I can take swimming at the Y in Winnipeg". What a funny kid!

Any travelling advice, please send along - we hope to do the drive in 2 days. We have a laptop for DVD's, snowchains for our tires, gravol for Ziggy, wine for me (egad - anyone who has driven through Golden can have sympathy) and lots of music.

The countdown has BEGUN!!

Our Liberian Children

My mother in law Allyson began sponsoring a boy names Taiwoe over a year ago. She told me of her friend Karen Barkman who runs Provision of Hope - www.provisionofhope.com. She works with ACFI in working with children and familes to have sponsorship so they can have food, be clothed and go to school. Karen has gone over to Liberia, and has set up small businesses for some of these families, as to care for their children and make a living. We were so touched in hearing of the orphanges and the poverty (something we do not know or understand as Canadians)

We decided to sponsor these children. Doing so teaches Zig, Isa and Lucy a tiny bit of what we would like them to take in during their own lives. We want them to think of others on an international level and help others always. We chose children who were similar ages to our own kids, so they could write and realize there was a kid on the other side of the world who had a completely different life than they knew. I really feel that we are such a spoiled country, that often we don't see the small miracles in life, but often demand BIG ones in order to be pleased.

These children are miracles, we would love to go meet them, and learn much from them. Tim saw snippets of life (as we do not know it to be) when he went to Egypt. There was generations of poverty, children as slaves and yet a kindness that made him glow. When Karen emailed us the pictures of our kids, Tim decided and stated "Well, I think we should keep sponsoring more kids instead of increasing our standard of living"...so that is our goal...Really, why do we need so much "stuff" , we have so much....we are so blessed..

Wleh is 11 years old and he loves soccer!

Rachael is 5 years old. What a sweet kid!!

Princess is 8 years old and she is a princess!

If anyone is interested in sponsorship, please check out the Provision of Hope website - www.provisionofhope.com . Also check out the photo section - what beautiful children! Or email me and I will forward you Karen's information.

Lucy & Zig's adventures!

Zig's wife

New Camera!!

Zig and Lucy have these great adventures. Zig decorates the living room as a certain country and dress accordingly. Its so cute..They have been to Hawaii (or as Lucy calls it Wa-hhaii), Egypt, The Jungle, Searching Caves, and the Mountains. Zig plays really well with her. He took these pictures with his new digital camera. He saved up all his $$$ from his birthday and such, researched this camera for quite awhile and bought it for a wonderful price. He has a very good eye for photography. When reviewing all of his pictures , I realized how many he took of his little women- KERBY! There were at least 18 pictures of our poor, lazy dog! If only she knew how loved she is!

Updates...

Lucy @ IKEA

So we haven't updated in FOREVER...our camera was nicely smashed and we felt super sad about that...so I didn't post..

I left off in Sept. Kids began school, Ziggy is in band and playing trumpet..Very cool ! Isabel is in drama classes at Shadbolt Centre and is really liking them a lot. Miss Lucy is still taking her swimming lessons. For the first month of lessons, she basically refused to listen to the teacher - he would talk and she would just walk away - as well she didnt EVER speak a word to him...Now we are in Mom'n' Me swimming classes..As a family, we did the Terry Fox run on Sept 18th. Thanks to everyone who sponsored us, we gathered over $200 for the foundation. We all ran the 5km , even Kerby (she thought it was a race and proceeded to pull Tim and I along)

White Rock Farmer's Market

We had a nice break as Tim had 10 days of holidays before he started on his new team (NHL Next- Gen) We had a great time with him - went White Rock for fish n' chips, went walking, went shopping but mostly we just enjoyed him being home. We set up our office so Tim and the kids could sculpt anytime - and they have! They have made some beautiful sculptures (I will post pics) It's amazing to watch the kids' talent coming out.
