We have lived in BC now for 1 year. We are still acting as though we are tourists...a good way to appreciate everything!

Our Liberian Children

My mother in law Allyson began sponsoring a boy names Taiwoe over a year ago. She told me of her friend Karen Barkman who runs Provision of Hope - www.provisionofhope.com. She works with ACFI in working with children and familes to have sponsorship so they can have food, be clothed and go to school. Karen has gone over to Liberia, and has set up small businesses for some of these families, as to care for their children and make a living. We were so touched in hearing of the orphanges and the poverty (something we do not know or understand as Canadians)

We decided to sponsor these children. Doing so teaches Zig, Isa and Lucy a tiny bit of what we would like them to take in during their own lives. We want them to think of others on an international level and help others always. We chose children who were similar ages to our own kids, so they could write and realize there was a kid on the other side of the world who had a completely different life than they knew. I really feel that we are such a spoiled country, that often we don't see the small miracles in life, but often demand BIG ones in order to be pleased.

These children are miracles, we would love to go meet them, and learn much from them. Tim saw snippets of life (as we do not know it to be) when he went to Egypt. There was generations of poverty, children as slaves and yet a kindness that made him glow. When Karen emailed us the pictures of our kids, Tim decided and stated "Well, I think we should keep sponsoring more kids instead of increasing our standard of living"...so that is our goal...Really, why do we need so much "stuff" , we have so much....we are so blessed..

Wleh is 11 years old and he loves soccer!

Rachael is 5 years old. What a sweet kid!!

Princess is 8 years old and she is a princess!

If anyone is interested in sponsorship, please check out the Provision of Hope website - www.provisionofhope.com . Also check out the photo section - what beautiful children! Or email me and I will forward you Karen's information.

Very cool. Gary actually mentioned the other night that we should sponsor a kid. So, we'll be looking into it once the move is over. I'm goin to research a bunch of ways you can sponsor kids...do you have info on Karen's kids-is it an organization, how much money gets to the kids, etc...

Love you guys lots!

Thanks so much! Yes, this sponsorship goes all to the kids. We sponsor these kids in an orphanage of 500 children whith a Pastor and wife as the Directors. It pays for clothing, food, and some education...really its only $30 a month- so it covers the essentials. I believe Karen is the main person (and she works this out of her home) There is virtually no overhead or admin fees. We have also adopted another boy - Uriah - I will post his picture and such this afternoon. Karen has gone to Liberia, and worked in this orphanage. The organization (that she runs ) is Provision of Hope. If anyone is interested - I can give you more info...

Karen has many children to choose from - you can ask for a certain age , gender or whatever. We chose kids that were Zig, Isa and Lucy's ages but have now also adopted another older child. I will post his picture this afternoon (fri afternoon)

I am also posting an exerpt from Karen's email which is what happened to our kids at their home (Daniel Hoover Orphanage) ...

"The rebels came through with AK47's and threatened their lives, the school was hit and alot destroyed. The end of that war was July 2003, we came (KaREN & team)in November 2003, and the rebels still hadn't submitted their guns. The pastor of this orphanage was beaten and they had taken him to the back of the building, ready to finish him, when one rebel recognized his brother's child. Then they realized they had hit the wrong orphanage, they were really after former President Taylor's orphanage. But the damage was already done."
